New MDE Government Relations Staff
Commissioner Cassellius announced the hiring of 2 new government relations staff at the MDE. The new government relations director is Kevin McHenry and the new legislative and planning coordinator is Daron Korte. Kevin and Daron both previously worked in the Minnesota State Senate. Here is the press release.
Minimum Hours Legislation
The 2011 Omnibus Education Bill included language requiring school districts to adopt a school calendar that includes prescribed minimum instructional hours broken down by grade level. The new language amends the previous law that required a minimum number of instructional days. I am attaching a copy of a letter distributed by Tom Melcher that summarizes this change.
