Mindy Greiling feels it is very
important for children to receive a good
education, and for more than 15 years at the state
level, she has worked toward making that
happen.
Greiling, DFL-Roseville, represents
House District 54A, which includes part of St.
Anthony, most of Roseville and Lauderdale. This
October, she received the 2009 Friend of Public
Education Award from the Association of
Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD), an
organization that supports school districts and
students in the Twin Cities area.
"I feel
very honored and proud, and it gives me a nice
feeling...considering we came up dry for education
funding this year because of the deficit,"
Greiling said. "I think the award encourages me to
keep it up until we do."
Greiling also received
the Friend of Public Education Award from the AMSD
in 2007, which makes her the only legislator in
AMSD history to receive it twice.
"That
makes me very proud," she said.
This year,
Greiling was presented the award for her efforts
to pass the New Minnesota Miracle legislation,
which she was the chief author of. Greiling said
the New Minnesota Miracle is education finance
reform legislation that provides proper funding
for schools so the funding is more equitable. It's
based less on property taxes and more on state
funding, which in turn lowers property taxes, she
said.
"I've been very, very pleased that so
many people all around the state recognize that we
need better funding for schools," she said.
"Everybody says New Minnesota Miracle is fair to
kids wherever they live, which makes me very
proud."
Greiling also received the Friend
of Equity Award from Schools for Equity in
Education, and the Legislator of the Year award
from the Minnesota school Boards
Association.
Before being elected to the
Minnesota House of Representatives in 1992,
Greiling taught in St. Paul for five years and
served on the Roseville Area School Board for two
terms. She is now the chair of the Education
Finance Committee.
"In all of those roles,
I see it as very important for kids to get a good
education," she said.
In the October 2009
edition of AMSD Connections, Jon Tynjala, Mounds
View school board member and AMSD chair, wrote,
"It is important that we take the time to
recognize state policymakers who make significant
contributions to public education and show the
courage of their convictions during the
legislative session."
